Sri Lanka's east coast

A surfers' paradise — and so much more

Arugam Bay is one of the world's great surf towns, ranked No. 8 among Asia's best surfing locations and among the ten best surf destinations of 2019. But it's also the only place in Sri Lanka with access to five national parks — a rare meeting point of world-class waves, wild safaris, mangrove lagoons, golden beaches and 2,000-year-old temples, all within a short tuk-tuk ride.

Variety is the magic here

What travellers love most about Arugam Bay is the variety and flexibility. It isn't just one wave — around ten surf spots sit within a 30-minute tuk-tuk ride, so even a long surf holiday never gets boring; just shift to a different break to spice things up.

Beyond the surf, it's a classic tropical holiday: clean white-sand beaches, crimson sunsets, warm island culture and a perfect, consistent swell shaped by the bay's unique geography. Whether you're chasing waves or simply chasing the slow life, Arugam Bay delivers.

Five national parks on your doorstep

Arugam Bay is the only place in Sri Lanka with access to five national parks — a wildlife haven most of the island can't match.

Kumana National Park (Yala East) is one of the country's most important bird sanctuaries, home to some 255 species alongside elephants, leopards, jackals and crocodiles; its lagoons fill with migratory birds from mid-October to April. Lahugala–Kithulana National Park is a playground for around 200 wild elephants, while the ancient Kudumbigala–Panama Sanctuary and its forest monastery adjoin Kumana to the south.

Lagoons, mangroves & 10 km of beach

Beyond the surf, the coast unfolds into a string of beaches and mangrove lagoons rich with wildlife.

Glide by canoe through Pottuvil and Okanda lagoons to spot crocodiles, water monitors and birdlife among the mangroves. Along roughly ten kilometres of coastline you'll find quiet sands at Panama, Peanut Farm, Crocodile Rock, Kottukal and Okanda beaches — for surfing, sea bathing, sun and long empty walks.
